Lawton Real Estate

As the county seat of Comanche County, Oklahoma, Lawton is the commercial and cultural center for people living southwest of Oklahoma near the Wichita Mountains. Since about forty percent of the families living in Lawton have children eighteen years or younger living at home, Lawton is a great place to raise a family - especially with several high schools and Cameron University in the area.

If you enjoy outdoor recreation, there is plenty to see and do in the nearby Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. With granite, sandstone, and limestone deposits throughout the park, the area is a favorite with hikers and backpackers, but there is also a lot of wildlife to see and a lot of room for backcountry camping. If you prefer swimming, fishing, and boating, Lake Lawtonka isn't very far away either. In all, there are eighty parks to choose from for local family recreation as well; many of which can be reserved in advance.

A Town with Historic Flavor

For those who enjoy history, there are several historic villages and forts in the Lawton area. One of the most popular historic attractions near Lawton is Fort Sill. Staked out as early as 1869 during the Indian wars, there is definitely a lot of history to be explored at this national historic landmark. Today Fort Sill is still an active Army installation, but visitors can also tour the grounds and view older infantry barracks, artillery, and cemeteries.

Medicine Park is another popular place to catch a glimpse of early Lawton history. The town is quite small, with a population of less than four hundred people, but the red granite cobblestone houses are original structures that went up around the town's founding in 1908. Medicine Park is also known as the first planned resort town in the state of Oklahoma. As a result, there are several popular tourist attractions in the area such as a swimming pool, skating rink, and dance hall. Fishing and Swimming at Bath and Gondola Lakes, the Old Plantation Restaurant and several resort cabins also make the area a popular getaway location.

Another great place where children and families can learn about early western history is The Museum of the Great Plains. During your visit you can tour outdoor replications of the Red River Trading Post, the Blue Beaver School House and the Frisco steam engine or walk through indoor exhibits that teach about old wagons, tepees, and animals of the plains.

A Glimpse at Lawton

Another attractive feature about Lawton Real Estate is that home prices in this beautiful area are much lower than the national average.
