Sand Springs sits along Interstate 412 and Highways 51, 97, and 64 just to the west of Tulsa where it originated from a small band of Cherokee who first lived there in the 1820's. The treaties with the US Government led to the transfer of lands from Cherokees to the Creeks. The area's springs were great for drinking water. Near the Keystone Plaza Shopping Center lies a small cemetery as the final symbol of the previous settlement. Charles Page bought 160 acres after becoming rich in the oil boom and chose the area to give back to the community. He set up a home for orphans that grew into what we now call the Sand Springs Home for Children. He also built a park with a small zoo of animals and amusement rides and brought in deer and bison to roam the Sand Springs Park. He later built a railway to connect the town to Tulsa which closed in 1955 and was the final interurban railway operating in Oklahoma. In 1918 he established a widow colony allowing widows to maintain their families.

In addition to manufacturing, glass, and box companies, the town grew to be known for medical and social entities such as the Salvation Army Maternity Home, Poole Hospital, and the Sand Springs School for the Deaf. The town later developed Shell Creek Lake to provide water for the area from which Tulsa declined to purchase water. The small airport located in town, originally called Simms Airport was later re-named after astronaut, William Pogue. During the Great Depression, the population declined only to reach 20,000 by the year 2020. The city's industries currently include steel, medical diagnostics, fiber casting, piping companies, and retail as well as restaurants, some smaller healthcare clinics, and banking institutions. Other jobs in construction and manual labor abound as do multiple small businesses.

The Sand Springs Public School District ranks 96th in Oklahoma and 143rd best for athletes. The District receives an overall grade of B from www.niche.com which shows higher grades for Diversity and College Prep than it does for health and safety or clubs and activities. The district maintains a 17:1 student-teacher ratio. The same site rates the town as the 12th highest suburb in Oklahoma with the lowest cost of living and the 19th best suburb to raise a family in Oklahoma. With its access to Tulsa and all of the amenities the metropolis has to offer, it is easy to see why so many choose to settle in and call Sand Springs their home.
