One of the new MAPS 3 projects that will begin this year in the fall is the Modern Street car that will link important districts in the urban core of downtown Oklahoma City to each other providing a hassle free transition for those enjoying downtown Oklahoma City. The streetcar will be flush with the street level and run on rails. The streetcar has been broken up into two routes with possible extensions in the future.Route #1: Route covers 4.86 miles of downtown Oklahoma city connecting the Downtown Transit Center, Automobile Alley, the old Santa Fe Station (future intermodal hub), Midtown, St. Anthony's Hospital, Bricktown, and the future MAPS3 Convention Center and Park.Route #2: Spans 2.04 miles and will strictly serve the Bricktown, Cox Convention Center, Myriad Botanical Gardens, and the future West Park. This route requires a second track and car.The streetcar route criteria was carefully developed taking into consideration the need to include key destinations, existing transportation networks, future development potential, and future expansions. The city has negotiated with Brookville a streetcar manufacturer to build six modern streetcars for the rail system. The total project budget is $132 million.
