One of our favorite places to eat in Broken Arrow is El Viejo! Located at 81st and Aspen (145th) this little restaurant has so much to offer. As soon as you enter, you will be greeted by the friendliest staff, who will seat you and provide generous portions of chips and salsa. Whatever you decide to order is a good choice, because their food is fresh, authentic, and delicious! Some of my family's favorites are the queso, chimichangas, beef nachos, and fajitas, but everything is outstanding. Find time to stop in and enjoy lunch or dinner at El Viejo!

Nothing Bundt Cakes is now in Broken Arrow! This bakery that specializes in delicious bundt cakes and mini bundt cakes (called bundtinis) is located at 1228 E Hillside Drive. The Broken Arrow Rose Festival has become an annual tradition in the early fall. The Rose Festival will take place from September 31 - October 2nd. Featured this year is a Chalk Art Contest, vendors, food trucks, a free kids' zone, and a dazzling light show on Friday evening. The festival ends on October 2nd with Rose Kites over Broken Arrow from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Broken Arrow Event Park. Being new to the area, I am so glad I settled in Broken Arrow. My favorite part of the area, though, is the Rose District. I've been to the Rose District to do everything from swimming and going down the slides with the kids to eating at five-star restaurants. Super fun, super chic place to gather on a nice evening.

H2O Inflatable Aqua Park is Broken Arrow's newest water park. Beat the heat in the water this summer at this family-friendly park. With over 20 inflatables to slip, slide, and jump off of, this water park offers an exciting way to cool off. Located at 2800 E New Orleans St. in Broken Arrow, this park is just a short drive from Tulsa, Bixby, Glenpool, or Jenks. With lifeguards and a sandy beach, there is something for everyone at H2O. In the days of Indian Territory, Broken Arrow was settled by Muscogee Creek Indians relocating during the Trail of Tears. The Broken Arrow Muscogee people built log homes and farms. Their spring water was provided by a spring that is located in what we now call Roy Harral Nature Park. Later on, the Muscogee Nation chose to settle their capital in Okmulgee. The earliest church and school for the Muscogee Nation were placed on opposing sides of the river and a ferry was used to transport them. That ferry was located in Broken Arrow on what is now called the Indian Springs Sports Complex.

Following the Civil War, the US built railways through Muscogee Nation connecting Muskogee to Tulsa, and opened up the land for communal ownership despite the wishes of the Muscogee Nation. The railway was significant for the agricultural economy to ship their goods. The city of Broken Arrow was established in 1902 in the Indian Territory five years prior to statehood.
Broken Arrow is situated between the Creek Turnpike and Highway 51 which takes commuters straight into downtown Tulsa and surrounding areas for work. The industries in Broken Arrow vary from banking, retail, aviation, and manufacturing to home building and construction. Those commuting to Tulsa experience a brief drive averaging 18 minutes. The community now boasts a population of over 100,000 members and is one of the largest school districts in Oklahoma. Overall, the Broken Arrow School District is rated #4 in the state. For athletes, it is ranked #28. The overall grade for the district is a B. It excels in clubs and activities as well as diversity. The student-teacher ratio for Broken Arrow is 19:1.

Things to do in Broken Arrow include fine arts performances at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center and the Broken Arrow Playhouse, touring the Blue Bell Ice Creamery, hike in the park at Haikey Creek or Ray Harral Nature Park. You can enjoy a nice dip in the pool at the Family Aquatics Center, shop at Bass Pro, or hit a couple of museums such as Museum Broken Arrow or Military History Museum. Other enjoyable outings can include bowling, movies, and antique shopping at places like Jade on Main Street. Others might enjoy shopping at boutiques and trying new restaurants in the downtown Rose District which is bustling with activity and excitement over the renovated downtown area. Perhaps a visit to Broken Arrow's newest park treasure, Elam, a master plan park on 53 acres would suit the whole family. It has an 18-hole golf course, community center, aquatics center, nature pavilion, and butterfly garden in addition to a playground, splash pad, and exercise stations where you can work out if you don't want to play tennis, pickleball, or swing in the hammocks. Throughout the year they have parades for Rooster Day Festival, Christmas, and other activities and festivals. One of the more well-known holiday outings is the Rhema Church Christmas Light Display that people travel from miles around to view it. Anywhere you go in Broken Arrow, there is something to do!

The Rose District is Broken Arrow's super charming, super chic destination for food, drinks, shopping, and sidewalk conversations. City of Broken Arrow announced this week that they are going to build a 53 acre public park. This huge new park will include many different activities for adults and children to explore. Playgrounds, splash pads, tennis and basketball courts, and frisbee golf course just to name a few. Check out the link below for more information.

McAllister's Deli in Broken Arrow has the best sandwiches and iced tea in the city. It is always a treat to go to McAllister's Deli for lunch. Popular choices are the French dip and Ruben sandwiches. Broken Arrow is continuing to outpace our cities in expansion and modernization. Street widening projects, automated utilities tracking, and a thriving downtown Rose District are bringing Broken Arrow to the forefront of desirable places to live in the greater Tulsa area. The city planners and managers have been careful to keep the same small-town feel to this community. Tragic snowmelt has quickly brought an end to the many snow sculptures and front yard snowmen and women across our community. The last of the snow from our last subzero storm has begun to melt. Noticeable higher traffic volumes as citizens climb out of their homes and get back to their weekend routines of going to the store and church. Many have had plumbing issues due to frozen pipes. Although the storm brought on many complications and closures, it also brought neighbors and the community together. One of the things I love most about Oklahoma is the way that neighbors and complete strangers rise to the occasion to help one another. Joyce and I called many of our past clients and were able to bring groceries and laughter to an otherwise isolating event. Most of the year we have little need for our four-wheel drive Chevy, but at the extremes, it is sure nice to have.

The main roads in Broken Arrow are well groomed and clear for the most part, but the neighborhoods are very icy and slippery. Even with my 4x4 I am slipping around on neighborhood streets. I have also noticed some drivers entering neighborhoods too fast and not being able to stop. Remember to give yourself a lot of room to slow down before stop signs and traffic lights. Drive slow and stay safe. The ice and snow should all be melting within a couple days.

Built in 1967 by a group of Tulsa businessman, J.A. Buddy LaFortune best known for his golf course designs, worked alongside Joe Finger to design a challenging course that would be considered to be one of the best in the nation. Finger and LaFourtune designed a course that "ranks at the top of all of his designed courses" and is "one of the finest in the nation" (Finger 1967).

This specific course not only allows a challenge for its golfers but offers a "natural beauty" allowing its participants to soak in a relaxing environment while enjoying a little friendly competition. Cedar Ridge Country Club not only offers "eighty-seven sand traps", beautiful scenery, tennis courts, swimming, a dining area offering social events, and memberships!

Ice ice baby!! A cold snap has come down from the North and created some icy conditions for Broken Arrow residents. Parking lots and residential streets are covered in thick ice. This is not typical for this time of year, the average temperatures for Broken arrow and Wagoner County are mid 50's during the day and mid 30's at night. It is the wind and moisture levels that are creating the low temperatures and icy conditions. Looking forward to March and April where the average temperatures range from highs in the mid-60's to the low 70's and nighttime temps around the mid 50's. Stay warm out there and if you do not need to be on the roads stay at home this week.

White River Fish Market has been a Tulsa fixture since 1932. This restaurant and fish market picks up fresh seafood daily from the Tulsa International Airport to provide the best in town. White River's second location is in Broken Arrow at Lynn Lane and Kenosha Avenue. If you have not been to this newer location, you are missing the boat. This 7,200 square foot facility houses both a restaurant and a fresh fish market. Seafood delights can be prepared deep-fried, broiled, or grilled; it's your choice. There are many small appetizers, a wide variety of side dishes, and large portion lunch and dinner platters to choose from. My suggestion is the fish skewer grilled or broiled with blackened seasoning. The deep-fried clams and shrimp would be a close second choice.

No matter what you order, the seafood here is delicious. Open from 10:30 a.m.to 8:00 p.m. daily and closed on Sundays, this restaurant has something for everyone. If you are in a hurry or just looking for fresh fish to go, you can order from the restaurant or pick up some fresh seafood to take home and prepare yourself. You will have the most exciting fishing story to tell your friends after dining at White River Market.
