Catoosa, a town situated just northeast of Tulsa on Old Route 66, was originally settled during a time when the area was also known as the Cherokee Nation just before statehood. When the railways began extending tracks and frequent routes from Catoosa to the east, it became an important location for shipping cattle back East. During the late 1900s, strip mining, as well as agriculture, and oil and natural gas production, began to boost the local economy. But Catoosa is perhaps now more well known for the Port of Catoosa situated on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System which now employs approximately 2,600 workers. For those who don't work in the city of Catoosa, it is a short drive to Tulsa or Claremore or 10-15 minutes where other financial, administrative, and manufacturing jobs abound. Catoosa is also known for the Hard Rock Casino where you can enjoy a good steak, a few slot machines, and a beautiful hotel suite as well as numerous concerts performed by well-known artists. Though Catoosa sits along Interstate 44, it is known more for its ties to Route 6. Perhaps one of the most well-known attractions found in Catoosa today is the Blue Whale. Made of concrete, the whale was placed in a 'swimming pool' type pond and, at the time of its opening, also featured a small zoo for all to enjoy. The zoo is no longer there, but the whale remains and tourists frequently stop by. If you or a loved one is a train lover, then the Catoosa Historical Museum is a must-see attraction. For nature lovers, Redbud Valley is a must-see hiking destination full of cliffs, caves, and prairie land. Catoosa now boasts almost 8,000 residents and a school district whose student-teacher ratio is 15:1. Overall, Catoosa is a great place to live because everything you need is accessible with very little drive time.
