In the mid-1800s the Koweta Creek Nation Mission School was opened up by a minister named Loughridge. The name was chosen from the Creek Nation in Georgia, where the Creeks originated prior to the Trail of Tears. The school closed just before its 20th anniversary and the town around it has continued to grow. Throughout the early 1900s, the railroad expansion from Muskogee to Tulsa brought new growth and expansion continued along the tracks laid through town. With newspaper companies and the agricultural industry all around them, the growth was maintained through the mid-1900s. In the 1970s the city hosted a memorial for those lost in the Vietnam War. That memorial was called The Moving Wall. Coweta lost eight sons to the war and that was more than any other city per capita. By the late 1990s, the school was bursting in population and jumped from 3A to 5A in size.

As of 2020, the population stands at around 10,000 residents who are mostly employed by the city, civilian jobs, the public school district, retail, healthcare, construction, and agriculture. Over half of the residents are employed in management, science, art, business, or sales and office type jobs. For those who want a smaller community but plan to work in Tulsa or Muskogee, the average commute times are made easier due to the multiple highways and turnpikes such as Highways 72, 51, 51B, and the Muskogee Turnpike for quick access to either Tulsa or Muskogee. Coweta is situated 30 miles from both Muskogee and Tulsa.

The Coweta School District is ranked 101st in the state out of 426 and is 131st for athletes. It received a B grade overall by www.niche.com with an A- in Diversity and B's in health and safety, academics, teachers, and Colleg Prep. Residents will find similar retail options as most of the bedroom communities of Tulsa have a few unique places as well. Off The Beaten Path Vintage and Antiques as well as the Indigo Tye Die Store makes for fun outings. A quick visit to the Mission Bell Museum for some history or a trip to the Oil Capital Gun Club and shooting range provides a variety of activities for everyone.
