When you get off of the I-40 and start to travel south in Oklahoma, you run across some beautiful little towns with funny names like Weleetka! We spent an afternoon in Weleetka today and this is a really neat town with some interesting history. Weleetka is situated ten miles southeast of Okemah in Okfuskee County. Located up on the hill above a horseshoe bend in the North Canadian River, Weleetka, is a Creek Nation word meaning "running water." Local farmers produced cotton, wheat, oats, alfalfa, fruits, vegetables, peanuts, and pecans over the years and still do today. There is also a history of oil exploration in this area and you can still see some of the old pump jacks still operating in the area. This small valley is a great place for photography or a nice ride on a motorcycle. There is a small diner downtown and an old historical museum housed in the recently renovated original town hall circa 1910. Check out the video of the Town Hall and the photos I took in Weleetka of the cotton and the water tower.
