In the mid-1990's, Edward L Gaylord, former owner of the Oklahoma Publishing Company, chose part of his family's land and turned it into a premier golf course and community. The name Gaillardia was chosen as an homage to the French botanist Gaylord de Marentonneau, who was the namesake of Oklahoma's official wildflower the Gaillardia. The first homes were started in 1998 and since then there have been 247 homes built in Gaillardia. Currently, there are 64 homes sites still available including a new phase in the southwest corner of the community.
