Since 1906, Shawnee Mills has been a major employer in Shawnee and has grown to become one of the largest independent mills in the United States. The company is still family-owned and operated and now produces more than one million pounds of food a day that gets shipped all over the world. I recommend getting some of the cornbread mix, I've been using it my whole life!

Looking to swim, boat, fish, or just enjoy a little time outdoors? West of town you'll find two lakes with picnic areas and even campsites. It's a great place to go watch the sunset on a warm summer evening!

If you love history and architecture like I do, The Pottawatomie County Museum is a great place to visit when you're in the area! Downtown Shawnee is home to the Santa Fe Depot which was completed in 1904 and operated as a train station until 1973. The following year it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and after a restoration has been operational as a museum since 1982. Stop by and learn about the origins of this historic town!

Did you know one of the oldest restaurants in Oklahoma is right in downtown Shawnee? Take a step back in time and grab lunch at Hamburger King! I've been going my whole life and I've heard people say it looks just like it did 50 years ago. Don't forget to save room for a slice of pie!

Have you ever looked around a historic town and wondered what buildings have stood the longest? In Shawnee, you can see the first house built in the area and even make arrangements to tour it! The Beard Cabin was built in 1891 by a woman named Etta Ray and her father who moved to Oklahoma to participate in the Land Run. Later that year she married a man named Henry Beard and they lived in the cabin which was then located at the corner of Kickapoo and Highland. The Beard Cabin has since been moved twice and was restored in 1999. You can now see it at 614 W Main right next to the Santa Fe Depot.
