The "Leaping into History" Kentucky Daisey Monument commemorates an extraordinary moment in time, forever etching the name of Nanitta R.H. Daisey into the annals of Edmond's past.

The Kentucky Daisey Story:

Amid the chaos and excitement leading up to the land rush into the Unassigned Lands in 1889, Nanitta R.H. Daisey, a newspaper reporter from Kentucky, set out on a quest for land ownership. Boarding a "Boomer Train" in Purcell, Indian Territory, Daisey joined fellow journalists, ostensibly there to cover the unfolding events. However, she had a more personal mission - to secure a piece of land for herself.

When the train arrived in Edmond, the passengers were constrained near the tracks, forbidden from leaving and becoming "Sooners" - individuals who illegally staked their claims before the designated time. Seizing a remarkable opportunity, Daisey convinced the engineer to let her ride on the cowcatcher at the front of the train. Once north of the station, she made her daring leap into history.

Wearing a dress and armed with stakes and a six-shooter, Daisey leaped from the cowcatcher. Ripping off one of her petticoats, she fashioned it into a flag to signal that the claim was taken. With a pistol shot into the air. She cemented her place in history.

"Leaping into History" vividly captures the momentous leap made by Nanitta R.H. Daisey, forever symbolizing the courage and determination of the countless men, women, and children who gambled their futures on the Oklahoma Territory. The life-sized bronze statue, created by Oklahoma artist Mary Lou Gresham, stands proudly in Centennial Park, just one block east of Broadway along First Avenue.

The Farmers Grain Kitchen + Cellar is serving up something new nestled in the heart of downtown Edmond. This farm-to-table scratch kitchen is serving up regionally sourced seasonal ingredients with a new American twist. With an extensive wine list and hospitality that will leave you wanting for nothing this new local gem is not to be missed!

Stop into Cities Ice Cream Shop for a real treat! Offering ice cream specials, build-your-own options, milkshakes and cold brew, their menu has something for every taste bud! This is the sister store to their other shop located in Oklahoma City, Capitals Ice Cream. Not sure what to order? Try a local's favorite! Order the Oklahoma Standard special which includes ice cream flavor of choice, fudge brownie, peanut butter, and chocolate drizzle finished with a miniature Oklahoma flag. It's a great way to get into the Oklahoma spirit!

Something you will notice as you walk down the streets of Downtown Edmond are the beautiful, vibrant and colorful murals that cover the town walls. Some are bright, bold, and hard to miss, while others are hidden in alleyways which makes a fun game of scavenger hunt for both adults and kids. These murals were created by artists who kept the beauty of Edmond in mind while creating unique paintings that each tell a different story.

Occurring every third Saturday from March-October, Heard on Hurd is a fun monthly street festival located in Downtown Edmond on Broadway between 1st Street and Hurd. The town joins together to enjoy local food, unique shopping, and live music. This is a lively event held outside, so there is plenty of room to lay out a blanket, grab food from a local food truck, and enjoy the free entertainment. Why not dance the night away all the while supporting local artists and shops?

The Railyard also has a fun outdoor communal seating area that is Edmond's largest covered patio, where they occasionally have live entertainment!

In the mood for some great coffee or an iced Latte? This adorable little shop in the heart of downtown Edmond is just perfect for relaxing either out on the patio or inside. It is a very inviting atmosphere with super nice baristas. I love the iced Breve Latte with a touch of Mocha! It's right off of Broadway in Downtown Edmond.

Looking for a great Optometrist? Look no further! Dr. V. Raquel Strange, O.D., Dr. Richard V. Simon, O.D., and Dr. L. Simon are excellent in their field of vision. Our entire family and extended family are patients here and the entire staff is wonderful! Check them out. You have to try Sunnyside Diner located at 2nd and Bryant in downtown Edmond. Bring your pet and sit outside in the covered canopy. Kids can also play games that are outside for their enjoyment while mom and dad relax. As they say, "It's Always Sunday Morning" at Sunnyside. They serve awesome breakfast food all day, along with lunch, dinner and Vegan options. I tried the Vegan Hamburger and it was delicious. What's even more fun, is the diner was a car repair shop (where I actually took my car), and there are pictures showing what the diner looked like back in the early years. Put the kids, pet and family in the car and go for an enjoyable dining experience at Sunnyside Diner. You won't regret it!!!

Downtown Edmond has a lot to offer and the annual Edmond Farmer's Market is one of them. Every Saturday from April to October, you will be able to purchase regionally grown products and locally made food items right here from this beautiful state.

They are located one block west of Broadway in Edmond, on 1st Street. It is open from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

From there you can head off for some shopping at one of the shops downtown has to offer.
